Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929 in the city of Frankfurt am Main in Weimar Germany, she lived most of her life in or near Amsterdam in the Netherlands. She is one of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust. She was born a German national, Anne lost her citizenship in 1941. The Frank family moved from Germany to Amsterdam in 1933, the year the Nazis gained control over Germany. The beginning of 1940, she and her family were forced to into hiding during the Holocaust. She and her family, along with four others, spent over two and a half years during World War II hiding in an annex of rooms above her father’s office in Amsterdam. After two and a half years of hiding, the group was betrayed and transported to concentration camps. Anne and Margot were eventually transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where they died of typhus in early March 1945, two weeks before the camp was liberated. Her diary has been the basis for several plays and films. She gained international fame posthumously after her diary was published. It documents her experiences hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II, since it was first published in 1947, Anne Frank’s diary has become one of the most powerful memoirs of the Holocaust. It shows a message of courage and hope in the face of adversity has reached millions. The diary has been translated into 67 languages and with over 30 million copies sold. Anne Frank’s story is especially meaningful to young people today. For many she is their first, if not their only exposure to the history of the Holocaust. Her bravely and ideals live on, however, and she is frequently cited as a model for today.
