Otto Frank was born on May 12, 1889, he was a German-born businessman and the father of Anne Frank and Margot Frank. He was born in Frankfurt am Main, he was the second son of Michael Frank and Alice Stern Frank. He has an older brother Robert (1886), a younger brother Herbert (1891) and a sister Helene (1893). His father Michael heads the family bank, which specializes in currency trading, The Franks are liberal Jews. Otto was a cousin of the well known furniture designer Jean- Michel Frank, and a grandson of Zacharias Frank. Frank served in the German army as an officer during the First World War. He worked in the bank his family ran until it collapsed in the early 1930s. He married Edith Hollander- an heiress to a scrap-metal and industrial supply business on May 12, 1925 on Otto’s 36th birthday. Their first daughter, Margot Betti Frank, was born on February 16, 1926, followed by Annelie Marie (Anne) Frank on June 12, 1929. Otto was the sole member of his family to survive the Holocaust, he had inherited Anne’s manuscripts after her untimely death, arranged for the publication of her diary in 1947, and oversaw its translation to the stage and screen. Otto Frank died on August 19, 1980.
